| The key to profitability
for any business–and the key to the efficient operation of a
not-for-profit organization or government agency–is workforce
productivity and effective workforce management. For the vast majority
of businesses and not-for-profit organizations, and for most government
agencies, their single largest cost of doing business is their workforce.
Therefore, workforce productivity and effective workforce management
will improve the return on the organization’s largest single
asset, its workforce.
Pay Employees Fairly and Accurately: As a starting point toward
more workforce productivity and improved workforce management, employees
should be paid fairly for the time they worked. Employees should
not be underpaid, but they also should not be overpaid. And only
a state-of-the-art time and attendance system will insure a prompt,
accurate payroll.
Management Tools: Information is the key to sound decision-making,
and managers can only make decisions related to workforce management
and workforce productivity with accurate, current data. Data that
is accurate but outdated is of little use. It must be accurate data
that is also available in real-time when it is needed so managers
can make workforce management decisions that improve workforce productivity.
Employee Empowerment: Another key factor in workforce productivity
and enlightened workforce management is an empowered workforce.
For example, the latest time and attendance software products enable
employers to make up their own work schedules and request vacation
time (subject, of course, to approval by their managers), helping
them to “own” their jobs.
Improved Morale: Employees who feel good about themselves and their
employer result in increased productivity, lower workforce turnover,
fewer management problems and lower labor costs. For example, an
automated time and attendance system that prohibits an employee
from working unauthorized overtime eliminates the need for a confrontation
between the employee and his or her manager. Enforcement of company
guidelines is achieved passively, leaving managers to praise, instead
of discipline, their employees.
